The Center for Undergraduate Research in Mathematics (CURMath) at Youngstown State University was officially opened on Saturday April 7, 2007 in the Ohio room of Kilcawley Center on the YSU campus. The official opening ceremony was held in conjunction with the 25th anniversary of YSU’s chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon (PME). There were nearly 80 alumni, faculty and students attending the event. Dr. Nathan Ritchey, the Interim Associate Provost, welcomed the participants and gave a brief history of PME and CURMath. Dr. J. Douglas Faires recognized past PME members and current CURMath officials. He explained the history and mission of CURMath. Panel discussions were held on (1) Opportunities for Mathematics Students, (2) Graduate School Experiences, and (3) Opportunities in Teaching, and a poster session by current students was arranged. Ample time was allowed for informal discussions among alumni, faculty and students. (View Program) Alumni and faculty enjoyed getting reacquainted, and everyone took pleasure in meeting new friends and talking with our students. CURMath director, Dr. George Yates, said “I believe we succeeded in showing our students the opportunities for them in mathematics and inspiring them to get involved in the various professional activities supported by CURMath. I think that the mathematics education at YSU is producing top quality students.”
